In 2022, Disney’s The Lion King made its historic Middle East debut in Abu Dhabi — marking a defining moment in regional entertainment. Staged at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, the production ran for four weeks, from November 16 to December 10, across 30 spectacular performances.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this legendary Broadway production — seen by over 110 million people worldwide — became the highest-selling show in Abu Dhabi’s history, setting an unprecedented benchmark for live entertainment in the city.

More than a theatrical event, The Lion King marked a cultural turning point. It was one of the grandest Broadway productions ever to arrive in the Middle East and opened the door for every award-winning musical that followed. Even Julie Taymor, the visionary creator and director of the original production, witnessed the overwhelming response first-hand during her visit to the premiere.
